Rider Tony Arbolino dominated the first free practice (FP1) of Moto2 at the Mugello circuit. Riding for REDS Fantic Racing, Arbolino posted a fastest lap of 1 minute 53.619 seconds. This result placed him at the top of the timesheets, ahead of Alex Escrig from KLINT Forward and Manuel Gonzalez, who rounded out the top three.
Technically, the track conditions were extremely tricky throughout the session. Although the rain had stopped, only the racing line had begun to dry, while areas outside the main line remained damp or wet. This environment created a high-risk scenario for riders regarding the timing of their tire switches, as an incorrect choice of compound could lead to a sudden loss of grip in the wetter sectors.
Pure pace only became evident in the final four minutes of the session, as several riders risked switching to slick tires. Arbolino, Escrig, and Gonzalez were the most successful in reading the track's transition. The strategy of deploying slicks at the precise moment allowed them to significantly improve their lap times compared to those who remained on intermediates or used degraded rubber.

A similar situation affected Celestino Vietti, who had briefly led the session in the closing stages. However, unable to match the speed of those on fresh slicks, Vietti dropped to fourth place with a gap of +1.182 seconds behind Arbolino. This substantial difference confirms that in mixed-condition tracks, tire transition timing is more critical than the base bike setup.
Meanwhile, the performance of David Alonso with CFMOTO Aspar remained a point of interest despite finishing tenth. His performance on a challenging track is highly scrutinized given the ongoing links between Alonso and the Honda HRC project for the 2027 MotoGP season. His ability to manage the bike in these conditions provides a glimpse into his potential adaptation to the Japanese factory.
The FP1 session also fueled transfer market speculation regarding Daniel Holgado. The Spanish rider is reportedly being considered by Gresini Racing to enter the new MotoGP 850cc regulation era alongside Joan Mir. Holgado's presence in the mid-pack during this session demonstrates the consistency required by satellite teams for the upcoming technical transition in engine regulations.
