Extreme weather conditions have already begun to disrupt the 2026 Miami Grand Prix weekend, with the first support race officially cancelled due to heavy rain and lightning at the Miami International Autodrome. The development raises concerns over the remainder of Sunday’s schedule.
The McLaren Trophy America race, scheduled to start at 08:00 local time, was called off due to unsafe track conditions. Persistent rainfall and thunder activity prompted organisers to prioritise safety.
This follows an earlier decision by the FIA to bring forward the start of the Formula 1 race to 13:00 local time, aiming to avoid the worst of the forecasted storms later in the day.

From an operational standpoint, the cancellation of a support race highlights how rapidly track conditions can deteriorate. Grip levels, visibility, and tyre strategy are all likely to be significantly affected under such circumstances.
Uncertainty now also surrounds the Formula 2 feature race, which marks the championship’s first visit to North America. Officials will need to assess whether conditions allow the race to proceed safely.
With rain and lightning already impacting the circuit earlier than expected, the Formula 1 race is set to take place under highly variable conditions, increasing the complexity of strategy and execution.
Further weather developments will be critical in determining how the Miami Grand Prix unfolds.
