Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Mercedes opened the 2026 Formula 1 season in the manner many had expected by securing a one-two finish at the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne. George Russell converted pole position into victory, finishing ahead of team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Mercedes demonstrated a clear advantage in qualifying pace, with Russell setting a lap time eight tenths faster than Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar, who qualified third. Antonelli was three tenths behind Russell, underlining the strong one-lap performance of the Mercedes package at the season opener.
Ferrari appeared capable of closing the gap slightly during qualifying if not for an energy deployment issue that affected its performance. Even without that problem, however, the gap to Mercedes would likely have remained greater than half a second.

At the start of the race, Russell lost the lead into the first corner to Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, while Lewis Hamilton managed to overtake Antonelli and briefly move Ferrari into a strong early position.
Leclerc held the lead during the opening phase of the race, but Ferrari’s strategy proved decisive. The team opted not to pit either driver during two Virtual Safety Car periods, allowing the Mercedes drivers to gain a strategic advantage once the Ferrari cars completed their stops under green-flag conditions.
As the race progressed, both Ferraris dropped behind the Mercedes pair, eventually finishing third and fourth. Leclerc crossed the line 15.5 seconds behind Russell, while Mercedes secured the maximum points available from the opening round.
The result reinforced concerns among several drivers that Mercedes could dominate the early phase of the season under the new 2026 power unit regulations. Despite the strong performance from the German team, Hamilton has expressed confidence that Ferrari can close the gap during the year.
Meanwhile, McLaren driver Lando Norris acknowledged that his team is currently some distance behind the pace set by Mercedes.
With the championship only just beginning, the key question now is whether Mercedes’ rivals will be able to close the performance gap quickly enough to turn the 2026 season into a genuine title fight in the coming rounds.
