Mercedes Delays ADUO F1 Engine Debut Until Late 2026 Triple-Header

Mercedes has opted to postpone the anticipated debut of its upgraded Formula 1 power unit at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. Under F1's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) system, the manufacturer was classified as being more than 2% adrift of Red Bull's benchmark 2026 power unit, which grants teams the provision to introduce mid-season upgrades.

While the update was initially slated for introduction at Austin this weekend, that schedule has slipped because the power unit is not yet ready. According to The-Race, the upgrade will not be prepared for next weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix either, making the Brazilian Grand Prix—the concluding round of the current triple-header—the earliest plausible arrival date.

This postponement follows a challenging period for George Russell, whose engine failure at Sepang earlier this month forced him to take a grid penalty in Singapore. The British driver will inevitably face another grid penalty whenever the team finally introduces the ADUO Mercedes engine. The team maintains a strict stance that the upgrade will only be deployed once engineers are entirely convinced it represents a genuine step forward in performance.

Although the Brackley-based squad is all but certain to secure both 2026 championship titles, any aerodynamic or mechanical revisions introduced in the latter stages of 2026 carry substantial implications for 2027. Any progress achieved through the ADUO engine—even if restricted to a couple of Grand Prix weekends—will provide invaluable telemetry and development metrics for the following campaign.

Away from the power unit, Mercedes will run its major chassis upgrade on both cars right from FP1 in Austin. The team previously adopted the unusual approach of running a split specification between its cars in Singapore. That experiment yielded critical data, and subsequent technical debriefs have equipped the engineering group with a clearer understanding of how to extract maximum performance from the updated package.
