McLaren Unveil One-Off Livery for Barcelona F1 2026 Shakedown
Formula 1, Sportrik Media - McLaren have revealed a one-off livery that will be used exclusively for the Formula 1 2026 Barcelona shakedown, marking the team’s first public step into the new regulation era.
The special livery will be run during the behind-closed-doors shakedown at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where each team is permitted up to three days of on-track running between January 26 and January 30. McLaren’s decision to debut a unique design underlines the symbolic importance of the first test of the 2026 generation.

Norris and Piastri Begin 2026 Journey
McLaren will retain an unchanged driver line-up for the new season, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both set to make their first on-track appearances of 2026 in Barcelona, wearing the special shakedown livery.
For both drivers, the Barcelona running represents their initial adaptation phase to the radically revised 2026 cars, which feature new power unit architecture and redefined aerodynamic concepts. The shakedown is expected to focus on system checks and baseline correlation rather than outright performance.
Livery as a Strategic Statement
Although the livery is a one-off design, its unveiling carries broader significance. In the modern Formula 1 landscape, early-season liveries are increasingly used as communication tools, signalling intent and marking transitions rather than simply serving aesthetic purposes.
As reigning world champions, McLaren enter 2026 with heightened scrutiny. The Barcelona livery acts as a visual bridge between the previous championship-winning era and the start of a new technical cycle, reinforcing the team’s methodical and measured approach.
Delayed Running by Design
McLaren have already confirmed that they will not begin full on-track running on the opening day of the Barcelona shakedown. Instead, the team plans to delay meaningful mileage until day two or day three, maximising the time available for continued development at the factory.
This strategy reflects McLaren’s prioritisation of preparation quality over early mileage. With the 2026 regulations introducing major changes to power units and energy management, additional development time before the car turns a wheel is considered strategically valuable.
Technical and Competitive Implications
By postponing its first full running, McLaren signal confidence in their internal validation processes, including simulator and dyno work. The Barcelona shakedown is therefore positioned as a controlled verification phase rather than an exploratory test.
For Norris and Piastri, the limited Barcelona mileage will be used to establish a reliable data baseline before attention shifts to the two subsequent Bahrain tests, which are expected to provide a more representative picture of relative performance across the grid.
Setting the Tone for 2026
The one-off Barcelona livery effectively closes McLaren’s pre-season introduction phase before the team transitions to its official race livery later in the testing programme. The move reinforces a disciplined, low-noise approach as McLaren prepare to defend their championship status under a new regulatory framework.
With driver continuity, technical stability, and a clearly defined testing plan, McLaren begin the 2026 season focused not on early headlines, but on building a foundation capable of sustaining competitiveness throughout the new era.
