McLaren Trying to Understand Ferrari's 'Inspirational' Upgrade Volume

McLaren says it is trying to figure out how Ferrari has managed to deliver an impressive volume of in-season upgrades during the 2026 Formula 1 season, describing the Italian squad's efforts as an inspiration for its own development push.

The new regulations have triggered a huge development war in the first half of 2026, with Ferrari and Red Bull particularly impressing rivals with the quantity of upgrades they have fast-tracked out of the factory. McLaren has also been active, but the Woking-based team is keen to learn from Ferrari's approach.

McLaren's engineering technical director, Neil Houldey, praised Ferrari's work. "I think we've done a pretty good job of bringing a lot of upgrades that have added performance to the car," he said. "But when you look around at our competitors, there are teams [like] Ferrari, who've done a fantastic job this year to just drive that development forward."

Houldey admitted the sheer volume of Ferrari's upgrades has caught his attention. "From a volume standpoint, it does look like Ferrari have managed to do a lot, and it's something for us to look at and understand how they were able to achieve that. From an aerodynamic development point of view, from a manufacturing point of view, how they turned around this stuff so quickly," he explained.

The McLaren man sees Ferrari's progress as a benchmark. "It's an inspiration for us to look at and say: 'Come on, we did well in 2024. We did well in 2025. But actually, how do we do even better in 2026 and moving forward into 2027?' These things, as with anything in F1, if you're not moving forward and finding ways of doing things faster and more effectively, then you're effectively going backwards yourself," Houldey added.

Despite the intense development race, McLaren has no plans to halt its 2026 upgrade programme early. The team expects to bring major parts in the coming races, including the Dutch Grand Prix, and will continue developing the car late into the season. Houldey believes the lessons learned this year will be crucial for the 2027 project, even if the car's concept changes.

"We expect the next few races to be bringing some major parts, and we expect to do that quite late on into the season as well. We're certainly not stopping development on 2026 because we know that whatever we take from 2026 into 2027, that learning will carry over," he concluded.
