McLaren will introduce a major upgrade package for the MCL40 at the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix as the Woking-based team attempts to reduce the performance gap to Mercedes. The team has confirmed updates across seven different areas of the car, including the floor, chassis, bodywork, front wing, rear wing, halo and roll hoop ahead of the Montreal weekend.

The aggressive development push follows McLaren's first major upgrade step introduced in Miami. That package immediately helped Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri secure a sprint one-two before both drivers finished on the grand prix podium. However, despite the strong result, Mercedes still maintained a clear pace advantage, with team principal Andrea Stella estimating a two-tenths-per-lap deficit in Miami.

The most significant technical focus in Canada is McLaren's new rear wing concept, believed to be the team's interpretation of the so-called "Macarena wing". The aerodynamic solution is designed to improve drag efficiency while maintaining high-speed stability, a crucial factor at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve with its long straights and heavy braking zones. If successful, the concept could allow McLaren to increase straight-line speed without sacrificing corner balance through the chicanes.

The technical battle becomes even more compelling because Mercedes is also bringing its first major upgrade package of the season to Montreal. Unlike McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull Racing, Mercedes deliberately delayed its development package after Miami in order to gather additional correlation data before introducing the new components in Canada.

The situation could make the Canadian Grand Prix a decisive moment in the constructors' championship fight. McLaren currently sits third in the standings on 94 points, 16 behind Ferrari and 86 adrift of Mercedes. With the performance gap still visible in both long-run pace and tyre management, the effectiveness of this weekend's upgrades may determine whether McLaren can rejoin the battle for regular victories.

Beyond the aerodynamic revisions, the updated floor and bodywork are also expected to target improved airflow consistency towards the rear diffuser. During the opening rounds of the season, the MCL40 occasionally struggled with aero balance instability as tyre degradation increased on medium and hard compounds. Montreal provides an ideal benchmark because its stop-and-go layout heavily exposes traction performance and rear stability on corner exits.

McLaren insists the momentum from Miami has strengthened confidence heading into Canada. However, with Mercedes also introducing a substantial development package, the technical confrontation between the two teams could become one of the defining performance factors in Formula 1's upcoming phase of the season.
