McLaren Brings New Upgrades to Zandvoort, Targets Another Win

After a successful outing in Budapest, McLaren is not slowing down. At Zandvoort, the Woking-based team has introduced another set of updates for the MCL40, focusing on the rear wing and brake ducts. This is part of their phased development strategy throughout the season.

The updates brought to the Netherlands are not just minor tweaks. There is a significant change to the FTM (floor transition margin) design, now inspired by Ferrari's approach. The exhaust outlet has been redesigned, removing the previous small vertical vane in favor of a more curved shape. The goal is clear: to increase downforce and aerodynamic efficiency by exploiting the interaction of hot gases with the rear wing.

Speaking of the rear wing, the world champions have also revised the curvature and chord of the three elements. However, the most visible change is on the endplate, where a third curved vane appears, pointing upwards. Meanwhile, the active aero mechanism tested in Budapest is not yet in use. The team admits they need more time to refine the system before racing it.

In addition to aero, McLaren has updated the rear brake cooling ducts. This area remains a key development focus, especially for tire temperature management. With this combination of updates, McLaren hopes to remain competitive on a track known for its banked corners.

Zandvoort is one of Lando Norris' favorite circuits. The flowing layout and high downforce requirements suit the MCL40's strengths, as seen in Hungary. However, the challenge remains. They need to prove they can win on different types of tracks, especially with rivals like Mercedes and Ferrari also improving.

With this latest upgrade package, McLaren clearly arrives in the Netherlands with big ambitions. Can they repeat their Budapest success? We'll have to wait and see on track.
