Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen has reiterated his approach to the new Formula 1 regulations, stating he will always drive to the limit—even if the vehicle were nothing more than a “shopping trolley”—ahead of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park Circuit.
The four-time world champion was among the most outspoken critics of the sport’s latest power unit regulations during pre-season testing at Bahrain International Circuit. Verstappen previously argued that Formula 1 should consider returning to a full internal combustion engine powered by sustainable fuel instead of the current configuration that splits performance roughly 50/50 between combustion and electrical power.
The Australian Grand Prix marks the first competitive weekend for the new generation of cars introduced under the major regulatory overhaul, widely regarded as one of the most significant technical shifts in the history of the championship.

Despite his reservations about the new rules, Verstappen emphasised that his mentality as a driver remains unchanged regardless of the machinery he is given.
“I don’t really like to overcomplicate it too much,” Verstappen explained.
“If I have to drive this car, last year’s car, or if I have to race a shopping trolley, I will drive it to the limit of what that shopping trolley can do.”
“You know what I mean? At the end of the day it has a brake pedal, a throttle pedal and a steering wheel with a clutch, and you just drive it to the limit.”
The Red Bull Racing driver also stressed that adaptability remains one of the core qualities required in Formula 1, particularly during periods of significant technical change.
“You try to adapt to what is needed. That’s what we are here for. That’s what you have trained for your whole life.”
“And the good drivers, of course, will always come out on top.”
With teams and drivers still adjusting to the new regulations during the opening round of the 2026 season, Verstappen remains confident that driver skill will continue to play a decisive role in determining the competitive order throughout the championship.
