Max Verstappen: Loyalty or the Long Game?
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Max Verstappen has described Red Bull as a “second family”

Max Verstappen is not a man who can fake excitement. The Dutchman, often a polarising figure, rarely shows child-like enthusiasm, yet when he sat before the world's F1 media at Zandvoort to announce his new Red Bull contract, his smile was unmistakable. His body language suggested a man who had perhaps enjoyed one too many energy drinks.

The decision to stay with Red Bull until 2030 raised eyebrows across the paddock. The team is currently struggling to match the front-runners, and with key figures like Christian Horner and Helmut Marko no longer at the helm, many wonder what Verstappen knows that we don't.

While the financial rewards of the contract are undoubtedly massive, Verstappen has never been motivated by money alone. His driving force is the desire to win races and championships. With Red Bull's current form, this decision seems more about loyalty than immediate success—or perhaps a calculated long-term strategy.

Verstappen referred to the Milton Keynes-based squad as his "second family," a phrase he has used before. Despite the departures, he feels a deep emotional connection to the team that nurtured his career. Talks with McLaren were, by his own admission, serious, but ultimately he believed Red Bull was still the best place for his future.

The impending departure of race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to McLaren in 2026 will be a significant test. Yet Verstappen sees it as an opportunity to rebuild and strengthen the team structure. He is confident in the new vision Red Bull is implementing and wants to be part of that resurgence.

This decision also signals self-belief. Verstappen is betting on the 2026 regulation changes to level the playing field, and he wants to be in the right seat when that happens. His loyalty may seem naive to some, but for Verstappen, it's a carefully considered long game.

As he put it, "I'm here to win, and I believe Red Bull can give me that chance." Time will tell if this gamble pays off. One thing is certain: Verstappen has never been afraid to take risks, both on and off the track.
