Max Verstappen has avoided a sporting penalty and will officially retain his pole position for the upcoming Singapore GP sprint race. The four-time world champion was thoroughly cleared by race stewards despite overtaking Lewis Hamilton while single-waved yellow flags were active on the circuit.
The investigation was triggered during the SQ1 phase after Sergio Perez suffered an accident by hitting the barriers at Turn 5. The resulting debris on the track forced marshals to deploy single-waved yellow flags between Turn 7 and Turn 8 to ensure driver safety in the hazardous sector.
Verstappen caught and subsequently passed Hamilton precisely within this yellow flag zone, immediately drawing attention from the race control officials. Drivers are strictly prohibited from overtaking under yellow flag conditions, making the FIA review critical for the final starting grid of the sprint event.
Prior to the overtaking maneuver, Verstappen received a direct warning over the team radio from his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, informing him that he was entering a yellow flag sector. The Red Bull driver acknowledged the situation over the radio team channel by stating his intention to handle the potential infraction safely.
Reflecting on the track incident via team radio, Verstappen explained his immediate thought process during the fleeting moment. "I think I have to abortg I’ll let Lewis by again. I think I passed him before the yellow, but I just wanted to be safe," he reported to the team pit wall before the stewards officially reviewed the telemetry data.
