Max Verstappen's final home Grand Prix ended in a way he never imagined: a first-lap crash at the last corner of Zandvoort, the very spot that had so often been the scene of celebration. Yet despite the disappointment, the Red Bull Racing driver took a moment to share a heartfelt farewell message with his loyal Dutch fans.
F1's return to the Netherlands in 2021 was closely tied to Verstappen's meteoric rise in the championship, ending the circuit's 36-year absence from the calendar. But while the event proved hugely popular, its privately funded model faced long-term financial hurdles. Ultimately, organisers decided not to negotiate a contract extension beyond the 2026 season.
"Zandvoort. I'm incredibly proud of what we've had here. What once seemed impossible became something really special. It means a lot that I got to be part of it. I'll always remember this. Thank you," the four-time champion wrote on Instagram after the race.

The weekend had been bittersweet from the start. After signing a contract extension that will keep him at Red Bull until the end of 2030, Verstappen managed only three points from the sprint race. In the main event, he scored none. Rain earlier in the day left patches of moisture on the track, and as he went through the banked final corner, he hit a damp spot and slammed into the barriers.
Verstappen took responsibility for the crash. "In the last corner, it was obviously still a bit wet. But in the end, I thought, 'OK, now there's a bit of a dry line.' And then, of course, I accelerated, but still had no grip. And that was quite a heavy impact, but everything is OK," he told Sky Sports Germany. "It's obviously a pity, but generally speaking, I'm just a bit disappointed because we were simply too slow the entire weekend."
Failing at home is a bitter pill to swallow, but his farewell message shows that Zandvoort means more than just a circuit to him—it's a symbol of an extraordinary career journey. Now, after his last race on home soil, Verstappen must shift his focus to the rest of the season, which still holds plenty of challenges.
