Andrea Kimi Antonelli has come under scrutiny from former Formula 1 driver and Sky Sports F1 analyst Martin Brundle after displaying visible frustration during his battle with team-mate George Russell in the Canadian Grand Prix Sprint race.

The intra-team fight at Mercedes became one of the defining stories of the Montreal weekend. Russell led from pole position while Antonelli remained firmly attached to the rear of the sister car. The championship leader appeared to possess slightly stronger pace but struggled to find a clean opportunity to make a decisive move.

The tension reached its peak on lap six when Antonelli attempted an outside pass into Turn 1. Light contact occurred between the two Mercedes drivers before Russell retained the position and pushed the Italian off the circuit. Antonelli immediately voiced his frustration over team radio, believing he had earned the right to racing room.

The situation worsened later in the lap when Antonelli ran off track again, allowing Lando Norris to move into second position. Antonelli eventually crossed the finish line in third place, 1.8 seconds behind Russell.

Writing in his Sky Sports F1 column, Brundle argued that Russell's defensive approach was entirely consistent with the demands of fighting for victories and championships. The former F1 driver suggested that most competitors would have acted in a similar manner.

"George was marginally more under control and had the advantage of track position, but Kimi looked a little faster, something we saw again in the grand prix. When Antonelli tried to go around the outside at Turn 1, he was very close to earning racing room. But ultimately, any driver fighting for a win or a championship would have run him out of road. Any of us would have done the same or expected the same," Brundle wrote.

While understanding Antonelli's aggression, Brundle was more critical of the young Italian's reaction afterwards. He suggested the 19-year-old temporarily lost focus and allowed emotions to influence his decision-making, an area that remains important for any driver competing for a world championship.

According to Brundle, one of Antonelli's greatest advantages is the experienced support structure surrounding him at Mercedes. As tensions escalated, team principal Toto Wolff intervened over team radio, instructing his driver to focus on driving and leave the discussion for the post-race debrief.

Brundle also highlighted the role of race engineer Peter Bonnington, whose experience managing elite Formula 1 drivers has become a valuable asset within the Mercedes organisation. The combination of Wolff and Bonnington provides Antonelli with guidance that few young drivers have enjoyed at such an early stage of their careers.

"Kimi is lucky to have the wisdom of Bono and Toto at moments like these. Most of us would probably have gone straight to the scene of the incident or engaged in blame afterwards," Brundle wrote.

Importantly for Antonelli, the disappointment of the Sprint race was quickly erased during Sunday's grand prix. The Italian once again battled Russell at the front before his team-mate retired with a battery failure while leading the race. Antonelli then controlled the remainder of the event to secure his fourth consecutive grand prix victory.

The result extended his championship advantage over Russell to 43 points. While moments of frustration continue to reveal areas for development, Antonelli's performances throughout 2026 have established him as a genuine title contender. For Mercedes, the challenge may no longer be unlocking his speed, but helping him manage the emotional and psychological demands that inevitably accompany a world championship campaign.
