Tension filled the air at the Jerez circuit as Maria Herrera successfully secured back-to-back WorldWCR championship crowns following a nerve-wracking opening race showdown. Starting from second on the grid right behind rookie sensation Paola Ramos, the experienced Spanish rider only needed a top-10 finish to mathematically seal her title defense.
Despite holding a comfortable mathematical buffer heading into the weekend, the champion admitted to battling internal pressure as the race unfolded under scorching conditions. Her main championship rival, Beatriz Neila, alongside race pacesetter Paola Ramos immediately showcased superior speed from the opening laps.
The dynamic of the race shifted dramatically when Paola Ramos was handed a double long lap penalty for committing a jump start violation. That infraction handed the race lead over to Beatriz Neila, while Maria Herrera found herself embroiled in a fierce multi-rider scrap for the remaining podium positions.

As the race reached its climax on the final tour, Paola Ramos executed a brilliant recovery charge to reclaim the lead from Beatriz Neila and secure her third victory of the season. Meanwhile, Maria Herrera sensibly managed her gap through the chasing pack to cross the finish line and secure the championship points she desperately needed.
Reflecting on the intense pressure of the afternoon, Maria Herrera opened up to media outlets including Motorsport Week about her mental battle on the track. "I knew I had the pace, but I feel the nerves in the second lap," Herrera recalled.
"I say 'okay, Paola, have a good pace. Bea has to want to push with Paola, so no problem. If I manage the gap to them and the gap behind me because the group, it was close every time, I just wanted to finish because I felt nervous, and it’s easy to do a mistake,'" she added.
Assessing the demanding nature of the 2026 season, the champion highlighted the overall progression of the grid. "The year was very intensive. I think I put more pressure on the lap time. I did one second less in every race, in every track," she stated.
"For me, the level is high. Every girl is improving a lot. In Jerez you can see it’s a big group, so it’s very difficult to continue with the same mood every year," Herrera concluded regarding the fierce competition within the paddock.
Beyond the sporting achievement, Herrera used her championship celebration lap to raise vital awareness for breast cancer research by displaying a special banner. The heartfelt tribute was dedicated to friends and key team sponsors deeply affected by the cause.
