The MotoGP weekend at the Lusail International Circuit heated up dramatically as Marco Bezzecchi delivered a stellar performance, shattering the lap record to secure pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix. The Aprilia Racing rider dominated a tense qualifying duel against factory Ducati contender Marc Marquez, leaving fans on the edge of their seats under the scorching 34-degree desert temperatures.
The opening qualifying phase unfolded in a quieter atmosphere than usual following the withdrawal of all four Yamaha machines from the event. Pedro Acosta, forced into Q1 after a difficult Friday, immediately found his rhythm and topped the timing screens. He engaged in a thrilling battle with Fermin Aldeguer, with both riders ultimately securing their progression into the pole position shootout alongside riders like Franco Morbidelli.
The intensity peaked as Q2 got underway, immediately disrupted by a crash from South Africa's Brad Binder which brought out yellow flags. Navigating through the caution zones, Marc Marquez initially set a blistering pace before Bezzecchi stunned the paddock with a phenomenal lap of 1:50.065, pulling out nearly three-tenths of destinction over his rival.
As riders returned to pit lane for a final set of fresh soft rear tires, the stage was set for a dramatic grandstand finish. Marquez improved his personal best but recognized that challenging Bezzecchi's benchmark was out of reach, comfortably settling for the middle of the front row. Meanwhile, Fabio Di Giannantonio put in a brilliant effort to snatch third on the grid at one of his preferred venues.
In contrast, Bezzecchi's teammate and title challenger Jorge Martin endured a difficult session while managing a broken wrist, finishing down in 11th place. With the grid now firmly established, anticipation reaches fever pitch ahead of the upcoming sprint and main races.
