Marc Marquez: Strategy Wasn’t to Crash Twice at Mandalika

MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Marc Marquez faced his toughest Friday of the 2025 MotoGP season at Mandalika, suffering two crashes en route to 11th place and missing direct Q2 progression for the first time this year. Fresh off securing the world title just five days prior, his day was overshadowed by unexpected incidents.

This article offers a detailed examination of Marquez’s challenges, drawing from post-session interviews and Mandalika’s unique demands, aligned with official MotoGP data.

Crash Incidents and Physical Aftermath

The opening day at Mandalika proved arduous for the Ducati Gresini rider. His first crash was a lowside with minimal harm, but the second—a highside at the fast Turn 5—saw the rear lose grip, violently ejecting him onto his shoulder. “It’s not the best way to celebrate the title,” Marquez joked wryly.

Describing his physical state as “stiff” post-highside, he shifted strategy to simply completing the session unscathed. “After the second highside, the plan was just to finish,” he explained. Although he held a Q2 spot at the start of his final run, consecutive yellow flags and degrading tyres derailed his efforts.

Furthermore, Marquez highlighted a persistent lack of bike feel throughout the day. “The priority wasn’t to avoid crashing anymore; we’ll try again tomorrow,” he added. This unease particularly affected his acceleration and braking points.

Slide Control Limitations with New Tyres

MotoGP’s newly introduced slide control system is intended to mitigate such highside incidents. Yet, recalibration for Mandalika’s stiffer rear tyres appears to have fallen short. “When tyre grip is too low, the controls can’t assist,” Marquez asserted firmly.

He detailed losing grip during the side-slide recovery, complicating matters further. Despite the system’s design for such scenarios, he reiterated, “Yes, but it didn’t activate because grip was insufficient.” Earlier, with fresh medium tyres in the morning and softs in the afternoon, it performed adequately. Overall, however, he noted significant time losses in acceleration and braking.

Realistic Targets Amidst Fierce Competition

With 14 Sprint race victories this season, Marquez remains pragmatic about Mandalika—a circuit where he has yet to win. “I started the weekend optimistically, but it’s not my track. I just want to get through this and await Australia,” he shared. Aiming for a top-five finish in Saturday’s main race would mark a victory in his eyes.

He commended Marco Bezzecchi’s blistering pace for Aprilia, noting, “Bezzecchi is flying.” From 11th on the grid, surging to the front will be tough, especially against the speed in Q1.

Teammate Francesco Bagnaia placed 17th, while fellow Ducati riders Fermin Aldeguer and Alex Marquez were the only Desmosedici entrants advancing straight to Q2. Q1 looms as a formidable hurdle, joined by the VR46 Ducatis.

Marc Marquez’s disappointing Friday at the 2025 Indonesia MotoGP underscores adaptation struggles to Mandalika’s conditions, including stiff tyres and ineffective slide control. Despite the dual crashes, his resolve to regain bike feel tomorrow endures. Ahead, a top-five target will test the new champion’s resilience. Follow the latest developments on SPORTRIK.
