Iker Lecuona has insisted he is not the outright favourite for victory at the Hungary WorldSBK round despite topping both Friday practice sessions at Balaton Park. The Honda rider showed clear pace advantage early in the weekend but remains cautious about his prospects.

Lecuona led FP2 by over one tenth of a second ahead of team-mate Nicolo Bulega, yet the latter remains the benchmark of the 2026 season. Bulega has won all nine races so far and is currently on a 13-race winning streak, underlining his dominance and consistency across different circuits.

While Lecuona’s outright speed places him firmly in contention, comparative analysis suggests Bulega retains an edge in long-run consistency. This distinction is critical in WorldSBK, where race management and sustained pace often outweigh single-lap performance.

Lecuona acknowledged that he is among the contenders but stopped short of claiming favourite status, pointing to the unpredictable nature of racing and the presence of other competitive riders such as Sam Lowes, who has previously challenged him closely in race conditions.

From a technical standpoint, Lecuona credited recent setup changes for improving the bike’s overall balance and grip characteristics. Notably, he achieved his fastest laps at the end of both practice sessions using the same tyre, indicating effective tyre management and stable performance over extended runs.

Physical condition added another layer of complexity, as Lecuona revealed he had been unwell the previous day, impacting his energy levels. Despite this, he maintained competitive pace, suggesting strong adaptability and confidence in the current bike setup.

The combination of improved performance and technical adjustments positions Lecuona as a genuine challenger this weekend, although Bulega’s consistency remains the key reference point for race execution.

The Hungary round will therefore serve as a critical test of whether Lecuona can convert practice pace into race results and disrupt Bulega’s dominant run as the 2026 WorldSBK season progresses.
