Iker Lecuona stole the spotlight in the second free practice session of the WorldSBK at Cremona Circuit on Friday afternoon. The Aruba.it Racing – Ducati rider set the fastest lap of 1'28.108, beating teammate Nicolo Bulega and Alberto Surra. The session was chaotic with numerous incidents and was red-flagged early on.
From the start, FP2 was tense. Yari Montella crashed at Turn 1 on his first flying lap. Shortly after, Remy Gardner suffered a heavy crash in the same area. His Yamaha ended up in the gravel, and Gardner was taken to the Medical Centre. Race Direction red-flagged the session to check track conditions.
After the restart, incidents kept piling up. Alex Lowes crashed at Turn 6, followed by Dutch rider Twan Smits who slid at Turn 2. Fortunately, Smits was able to pick up his bike and rejoin. Nicolo Bulega also crashed at Turn 8 after previously falling at the end of FP1. He reported issues with a bouncing rear end.
Despite the chaos, Lecuona was impressive. After initially trailing Bulega, he took the top spot with a 1'28.337, then improved to 1'28.108. His margin of 0.254 seconds over Bulega secured P1. Alberto Surra of Motocorsa Racing completed the top three with a 1'28.569.
Interestingly, the top five riders were all on Ducati Panigale V4R machines. Sam Lowes was fourth, followed by Tommy Bridewell in fifth. This Ducati dominance suggests the bike is well-suited to the Cremona circuit.
On the other hand, Twan Smits had to settle for 20th after his crash. The Motoxracing WorldSBK Team rider clocked a 1'30.038, 1.930 seconds behind Lecuona. Meanwhile, Gardner and Alex Lowes did not set a time due to their crashes.
With this result, Lecuona sends a strong signal ahead of qualifying and the races. However, championship leader Bulega will not give up easily. The battle at Cremona is expected to heat up, especially with many riders eager for a positive result.
