Lando Norris has responded to the extensive attention surrounding reported discussions between Max Verstappen’s camp and McLaren over a potential Formula 1 future. Norris stressed that Verstappen is not the only driver interested in joining the Woking-based team.
Reports following the Austrian Grand Prix claimed that Verstappen’s representatives had initiated contact with McLaren. However, there has been no official confirmation from the driver, the team or his management that those discussions have developed into contractual negotiations.
Verstappen’s future remains under scrutiny because he has not yet confirmed his position at Red Bull Racing for 2027. The Dutch driver is contracted through 2028, although reports of an exit clause potentially becoming relevant around the Hungarian Grand Prix have intensified driver-market discussion.

“A lot of drivers want to come to McLaren, so I don’t know why you just highlight Max,” Norris said.
Norris described interest from a four-time world champion as a positive reflection of McLaren’s competitive position. However, he admitted that he did not know how accurate the reports were and insisted that Verstappen joining the team was not currently a serious consideration.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has already stated that there is no vacancy in the line-up because the team has Norris and Oscar Piastri. Both drivers remain central to McLaren’s long-term plans and have established an effective working relationship during the 2026 regulation cycle.
Norris did not reject the possibility of sharing a team with a different driver at some point in the future, including Verstappen. Nevertheless, he emphasised that his own McLaren commitment extends for several more seasons and that the team’s immediate focus remains on its current partnership.
Verstappen has also repeatedly been linked with Mercedes, although George Russell has expressed confidence that he will remain with the team in 2027. Without an official announcement, each scenario remains part of unconfirmed driver-market reporting.
Norris’s response reduces the suggestion that the Verstappen reports have placed McLaren’s current line-up under immediate threat. Until a formal development emerges, the team will continue its project with Norris and Piastri, while Verstappen’s decision over Red Bull remains one of the central factors capable of reshaping the 2027 Formula 1 driver market.
