Kimi Antonelli was left to rue a costly mistake during qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2026 at the Baku City Circuit. The Mercedes driver crashed at Turn 1 in Q1, forcing him to start the race from 16th on the grid. The incident comes as a significant setback for the championship leader, who had been riding a wave of momentum with back-to-back wins at Monza and Madrid.
Speaking to Sky F1 after the session, Antonelli expressed his frustration. “I’m very mad about it,” he said. He explained that a sudden increase in grip caught him out. “The grip was coming up very quickly, lap by lap. I turned in, and suddenly I had a lot more front end compared to the lap before. Unfortunately, I touched the wall. It was a mistake from my side. Very unnecessary, to be fair.”
The crash damaged his front-left tyre and suspension, prompting Mercedes to order him to stop in a safe place. He was forced to watch the remainder of qualifying from the pits as his teammate and nearest title rival, George Russell, dominated to claim pole position by almost 0.9 seconds over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
Russell has been in electric form throughout the Baku weekend, and his qualifying performance underscores Mercedes’ strong package at the street circuit. For Antonelli, however, the race will be a challenging recovery drive from 16th on the grid.
McLaren’s Lando Norris believes Antonelli can still recover to second in Saturday’s race. His confidence stems from Antonelli’s remarkable comeback at the Italian Grand Prix, where he charged from 19th after an engine penalty to claim an unlikely victory on home soil.
Mercedes had previously considered giving Russell an engine penalty at Baku due to the circuit’s overtaking opportunities, but delayed it to coincide with an ADUO upgrade. This decision highlights the team’s strategic management of its drivers’ performance for the remainder of the season.
Despite the setback, Antonelli retains an 81-point lead over Russell in the championship standings. However, if Russell continues his stellar form and Antonelli fails to maximize his race, the title battle could intensify. The Azerbaijan GP will be a test of Antonelli’s mental resilience and technical skill as he aims to prove he deserves his championship lead.
