The international rallying community was taken by surprise as M-Sport star Jon Armstrong officially announced his split from longtime co-driver Shane Byrne. The unexpected news was shared via social media, marking the conclusion of a highly competitive partnership that spanned across the European Rally Championship (ERC) and the World Rally Championship (WRC).
The joint decision was made to pursue different paths as both competitors look ahead to their upcoming career plans for the 2027 rally season. The Irish driver explained that while it was a difficult choice, they both feel it presents a vital opportunity to explore new challenges moving forward, expressing deep gratitude for all the hard work and commitment shown over the past two years.
Throughout their time together, the pairing achieved remarkable milestones, including finishing as runners-up in the 2025 ERC season aboard a Ford Fiesta Rally2. Securing memorable victories at Rali Ceredigion in Wales and Rally Croatia cemented their legacy as a formidable crew, alongside the incredible milestone of stepping up to the premier Rally1 category in the WRC.

Despite showing flashes of brilliant raw pace, their WRC campaign was heavily hampered by reliability issues and retirements, with a seventh-place finish at Rally Sardinia serving as their season highlight. Nevertheless, they also delivered a stellar performance to win the Grampian Forest Rally in the British Rally Championship ahead of rival Romet Jurgenson.
As of now, neither driver has disclosed any definitive information regarding their respective sporting programmes or team lineups for the upcoming 2027 championship season, leaving the paddock guessing about their next moves.
