Joan Mir admitted he had "very, very low battery" physically after struggling to 20th in the MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix sprint. The Honda rider was far from his best, revealing he is battling a mystery illness that is sapping his strength.
The high-grip asphalt at Misano should have been a boost for Honda. His teammate, Luca Marini, qualified sixth and finished ninth in the sprint. But Mir, the 2020 world champion, was left trailing. He qualified 17th and fell to 20th in the race, 22 seconds from the lead and just under 2.5 seconds ahead of Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo, who crashed.
"I don't know what happened," Mir said after the race. "I already went to the doctor to understand a little bit what is happening, because I don't have strength. I don't feel at 100%g no, I don't feel at 50%."
This is not the first time Mir has faced health issues at the San Marino Grand Prix. In 2024, he withdrew from the race for similar reasons. Now, his participation in Sunday's 27-lap grand prix is in doubt. "I don't know. We will go day by day," he added. "Tomorrow I will see how I wake up. It's not that I feel bad on the stomach. It's a little bit of a headache and not able to be precise - tired. I don't know."
Despite this, Honda is showing signs of a resurgence. Marini, Johann Zarco, and Diogo Moreira finished ninth to 11th, offering hope for a strong points haul in the main race. But the spotlight remains on Mir, who must quickly find a solution to his physical condition if he is to return to competing at the highest level.
