Kimi Antonelli stands on the brink of Formula 1 history heading into the 2026 Mexican Grand Prix weekend, where the 20-year-old driver needs just two more points to mathematically seal his maiden world championship crown. Although he missed his initial chance to clinch the title at last weekend's United States Grand Prix—despite charging from pole position to claim his ninth victory of the season—his massive championship lead remains virtually unassailable for his remaining title rivals.
At present, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are the only two contenders left in the mathematical hunt after Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Lando Norris were officially eliminated in Austin. Holding a 123-point advantage over his Mercedes teammate and 124 points over the Ferrari driver with five races remaining, the permutations have narrowed down dramatically with only 125 points left on the table before the tally drops after Mexico City.
Should Russell pull off a race victory in Mexico City, Antonelli would only require a ninth-place finish to definitively secure the championship. Furthermore, if both drivers were to end the campaign tied on points, the Italian would prevail on countback due to holding a superior tally of nine grand prix victories this season, an insurmountable metric given Russell can only achieve a maximum of eight wins even if he triumphs in all remaining rounds.

Acknowledging the approaching milestone following his stellar performance in Austin, the young championship leader expressed his eagerness for the upcoming weekend. "I am very excited. We would love to clinch the title in style with a great result," Antonelli stated regarding his imminent title charge. "That’s always the mindset, and that is going to be the mindset from now until the end of the season. Just going to try and enjoy every moment, because these we’ll always remember."
Beyond the driver's championship battle, the Mercedes squad also holds an outside opportunity to lock down the constructors' championship in Mexico City, though the task remains considerably tougher. The Brackley-based outfit currently leads Ferrari by 133 points and must outscore their Italian rivals by at least 39 points to wrap up the team honors with four rounds still remaining.
