Dennis Hauger has signed a multi-year deal with AJ Foyt Racing, taking over the #14 entry and displacing Santino Ferrucci, who has driven the car since 2023. The announcement sent ripples through the IndyCar paddock, as the young Norwegian secures a coveted seat after just one full season in the series.
Hauger, a former Red Bull junior from 2022 to 2024, built his reputation in Europe with the 2021 FIA Formula 3 title and three seasons in Formula 2. But his move to the United States in 2025 proved pivotal: he won the Indy NXT championship as a rookie, immediately catching the attention of top teams.
This year, he stepped up to IndyCar with Dale Coyne Racing, scoring a top-10 on debut at St. Petersburg and a career-best eighth at the Indianapolis road course. Those performances convinced AJ Foyt Racing to act swiftly.
“Dennis has accomplished a lot for someone who is only 23,” said team president Larry Foyt. “Every time he’s moved into something new, he’s adapted quickly and he’s won. Coming over here and winning in Indy NXT as a rookie certainly got everyone’s attention, and then we watched how he progressed through his rookie season in IndyCar. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about where we want this team to go. We’re investing in our people, our technical side and our commercial program because we want to continue moving forward. Dennis is a big part of that plan. Dennis wants to win, and we want to win. That’s where everything starts.”
Hauger expressed his excitement about joining the storied team. “Larry and I have had some very good conversations about the team and where they want to go,” he said. “I’ve learned a lot in my first two years racing in America, but I still feel like there is a lot more for me to learn and accomplish in IndyCar. This team has so much history in this sport, but what intrigues me even more was hearing about the future and what they’re building now. I want to work hard with everyone there and see how far we can take it.”
The move has direct implications for Santino Ferrucci. In comments to Racer, Ferrucci said he hopes to contest a part-time campaign with Foyt in 2027. Since his Indianapolis 500 debut in 2019, he has finished every race there inside the top 10, making him an attractive prospect for a cameo. His experience and speed at the Brickyard could still be valuable to the team.
Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over Hauger’s teammate. The team had hoped to sign Josh Pierson, but he must first go through the series’ licensing evaluation process before being green-lit. If Pierson fails to meet the criteria, Foyt will need to explore other options to complete their lineup.
For Hauger, this is a golden opportunity to prove he belongs at the top level. With a team in the midst of rebuilding, he could become a serious contender in the coming seasons. For Ferrucci, while losing the full-time seat stings, a part-time role could still benefit both parties. The IndyCar silly season has delivered another twist, setting the stage for an intriguing 2027 campaign.
