Lewis Hamilton has spoken out after an emotionally charged weekend at Zandvoort. The Ferrari driver publicly apologized via social media for his sharp radio remarks during the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday.
A race expected to be a comeback stage turned into a test of patience for Hamilton. Despite showing promising pace, the Scuderia failed to secure a podium. But the most visible was Hamilton's frustration boiling over in the cockpit, especially when he felt the team's strategy was not in his favor.
The most critical moment came mid-race, when Hamilton, on fresher tires, found himself stuck behind teammate Charles Leclerc. Ferrari called Leclerc into the pits, but he stayed out another lap, leaving Hamilton in dirty air. That triggered an outburst from the seven-time world champion.
“Great way of wasting time, good job,” Hamilton quipped over team radio, as reported by Motorsport Week.
In the closing laps, a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) and a well-timed pit stop gave Hamilton a chance to close in on the top three. As Kimi Antonelli and George Russell swapped podium places, Hamilton seemed on track for another podium this season. However, he couldn't pass his former teammate and had to settle for a painful fourth.
After the race, Hamilton explained that the mid-race incident with Leclerc cost him valuable time—seconds he believes made the difference between third and fourth. “Today I lost several seconds behind Charles, which I think ultimately would have made the difference at the end,” he explained.
Now, with emotions cooled, Hamilton chose to take responsibility. In his social media post, he admitted his radio and TV comments were not the best version of himself. “I've listened back to some of my radio and TV comments. In the heat of the moment, frustration can come out, especially when you care as deeply as I do,” he wrote.
“But that wasn't the best version of me. I take responsibility for that, and I'll be better.”
Hamilton also reaffirmed his belief in the Ferrari project. Despite a difficult weekend at Zandvoort, he believes the team is building something big—a journey toward an eighth title he still fights for. “That passion comes from believing in this team, the people in it, and what we're building together. The direction is clear. The belief is there. And the fight is absolutely still on,” he concluded.
With Hamilton dropping behind Russell in the drivers' standings, the Italian GP at Monza next weekend becomes crucial. Ferrari's home race will be a true test for Hamilton to close the gap to his Mercedes rivals and prove his fighting spirit remains unbroken.
