George Russell will step out of his W17 machine for the opening practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix. For the first time in 2026, the British driver must hand over his cockpit for one of the mandatory rookie practice sessions, allowing Mercedes reserve driver Fred Vesti to take to the track.
Antonelli had previously missed FP1 sessions at Barcelona-Catalunya and Hungary earlier in the campaign to fulfill Vesti's mandatory rookie outings. Mexico City is traditionally chosen by teams for these FP1 driver swaps due to the dusty track conditions found early in the weekend, allowing regular drivers to resume testing smoothly from the second practice session onward.
Beyond the technical run plan, the weekend carries massive championship implications as Kimi Antonelli stands on the cusp of securing the 2026 world title. The Italian rookie holds a commanding 123-point lead over his teammate with only 125 points remaining on the table, meaning Russell must secure victory on Sunday to keep his mathematical championship hopes alive.

Should Russell fail to win the grand prix, Antonelli will automatically claim the drivers' championship crown. Even if Russell manages to cross the line first to claim victory, Antonelli only requires a ninth-place finish to seal the championship triumph. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton remains mathematically in contention, though a non-win for the seven-time world champion would similarly hand the title to Antonelli.
Aside from the title showdown, the opening practice session will feature several young talents making their mark. Aston Martin has confirmed Jak Crawford for another FP1 appearance, while Audi is set to hand rising protege Freddie Slater his very first official Formula 1 weekend debut during Friday morning's session.
