Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell will start the Sprint race for the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix from pole position after setting the fastest lap during Sprint Qualifying at the Shanghai International Circuit.
The Mercedes driver, who currently leads the championship standings, secured the top spot by almost three tenths of a second ahead of team-mate Kimi Antonelli, giving the Brackley-based team a front-row lockout for the first Sprint race of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Reigning world champion Lando Norris qualified third for McLaren, positioning himself as the closest challenger to the Mercedes pair. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton delivered a solid performance for Ferrari in fourth place, finishing ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc who will start sixth.
Oscar Piastri placed fifth for McLaren, while Pierre Gasly secured seventh for Alpine. The results placed Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari at the front of the field heading into the first Sprint race of the year.
The session proved far more difficult for Red Bull Racing. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen could only qualify eighth, while team-mate Isack Hadjar completed the top ten in tenth place.
The Shanghai Sprint marks the opening short-format race of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with points available for the top eight finishers. The grid remains provisional until officially confirmed by the FIA ahead of the race start.
