Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell and Mercedes-AMG F1 approach the 2026 Miami Grand Prix with a notably composed mindset, as the British driver adopts a different approach to championship pressure compared to Lando Norris at the start of the previous season.

Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer highlighted a clear contrast in how both drivers have handled their respective title expectations. During the early phase of his 2025 championship campaign, Norris frequently expressed discomfort with his car despite securing race victories, reflecting a level of internal pressure.

In contrast, Russell has displayed consistent confidence since the Barcelona shakedown, maintaining a positive and composed attitude even after being outperformed by team-mate Kimi Antonelli in races such as China and Japan. This psychological stability is viewed as a key strength in his current title challenge.

Heading into Miami, Russell remains a leading contender for the world championship, supported by both his raw pace and accumulated experience. His ability to manage expectations while maintaining performance consistency is seen as a critical factor in sustaining his campaign over the course of the season.

Antonelli, meanwhile, continues to emerge as a significant internal and championship rival. At just 19 years old, he has already become the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to lead the standings, adding a new dynamic to Mercedes’ competitive structure.

“I feel like he does at the moment. There’s a difference when I look at George compared to Lando last year. Lando seemed to carry more pressure, especially in how he spoke about not feeling comfortable with the car,” Palmer said on the F1 Nation podcast.

Palmer also pointed to Russell’s body language and overall presence within the paddock, noting a visible sense of belief and composure. The Mercedes driver is perceived as approaching each race weekend with the expectation of winning, even when results do not fully align with that outlook.

“George has that confident air about him. Every time he turns up, he believes he can win. It didn’t happen in Japan, but I don’t see significant pressure affecting him yet,” he added.

While acknowledging that pressure may build as the season progresses—particularly if Antonelli continues to close the gap—Palmer believes Russell currently has the maturity and control required to manage the situation effectively.

With the Miami Grand Prix marking the next phase of the championship, Russell’s measured and confident approach will be a key variable in determining whether he can sustain his position as a leading title contender through the remainder of the 2026 season.
