Blistering track conditions in Malaysia have forced Formula 1 into extreme territory. The sweltering heat prompted the FIA to declare a heat hazard weekend, opening up the option for drivers to use cooling vests to help regulate their core body temperatures inside the cockpit.
Yet, that crucial piece of equipment is conspicuously absent from the Mercedes garage. George Russell candidly admitted that strict financial limits have left the squad without the necessary funds to develop and integrate the cooling technology under current spending restrictions.
This year, teams must carefully manage their resources under tight financial caps. Rather than channeling funds into driver comfort systems, the Brackley squad chose to prioritize performance upgrades for their challenger to stay competitive against fierce rivals.

The situation highlights a split up and down the pit lane, as several rival outfits have managed to supply the technology to their drivers. Even so, opinions remain divided in the paddock, with some opting for ballast weight instead due to doubts over the system's overall efficiency.
Russell has called for regulatory intervention, suggesting that health and safety enhancements like cooling apparatuses should be carved out of financial restrictions so drivers do not have to endure extreme cockpit temperatures at the expense of development.
