Kimi Antonelli extended his Formula 1 championship lead with a record-breaking victory at the Canadian Grand Prix after team-mate George Russell suffered a devastating retirement while leading the race. The Mercedes driver now holds a 43-point advantage in the standings following one of the most dramatic races of the 2026 season.

Light rain before the start created a strategic dilemma across the grid. McLaren elected to fit intermediate tyres on the cars of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, despite the circuit being largely dry. Two additional formation laps, triggered after Arvid Lindblad became stranded on the grid, only accelerated the drying conditions and immediately exposed McLaren's gamble.

Norris initially appeared to have made the correct choice after launching from third to first at the start. However, the strategy quickly unravelled. Piastri was forced to pit at the end of the opening lap, with Norris following one lap later. Both drivers dropped deep into the midfield, effectively ending McLaren's hopes of challenging for victory.

At the front, Antonelli led Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. Russell overtook Antonelli at the final chicane on lap six, triggering an intense battle between the two Mercedes drivers that would define the race. The pair repeatedly exchanged positions while steadily pulling away from the chasing pack.

The duel intensified throughout the middle phase of the race. Antonelli briefly reclaimed the lead on lap 22 before a mistake at the hairpin handed Russell the advantage once again. A few laps later the two made slight contact at the final chicane, with Antonelli cutting across the kerbs and emerging ahead. Mercedes immediately instructed him to return the position, which he did without resistance.

The decisive moment arrived on lap 30. While leading comfortably, Russell suddenly lost power exiting Turn 9 and coasted to a halt with a power unit failure. The retirement stunned the paddock and transformed the complexion of the race. A Virtual Safety Car was deployed while Russell watched helplessly as his championship hopes suffered a major setback.

Russell's retirement handed Antonelli a commanding lead, while further reliability problems struck elsewhere. Norris retired after a mechanical issue, Sergio Perez also failed to finish, and Fernando Alonso had already exited the race earlier with a technical problem. The race ultimately produced six retirements.

The closing stages featured a classic battle between Hamilton and Verstappen for second place. Hamilton steadily closed the gap before executing a spectacular move around the outside of Turn 1 on lap 62. The Ferrari driver then pulled clear to secure his strongest result since joining the Scuderia.

Antonelli crossed the finish line unchallenged to become the first driver in Formula 1 history to win his opening four grands prix consecutively. Hamilton finished second ahead of Verstappen, while Leclerc secured fourth place. The result significantly strengthens Antonelli's championship position and provides Mercedes with another major boost as the 2026 title battle continues.
