George Russell has warned that Mercedes cannot afford to become “complacent” despite their dominance in the 2026 Formula 1 season. The German squad has enjoyed a stellar start, winning eight of the 11 grands prix held so far, but Russell insists their advantage could vanish quickly.
The British driver acknowledged that the fight at the front is tightening, with Ferrari claiming two wins and McLaren one in the last five races. Still, Russell praised his team's even-keeled mentality through both the highs and lows of the campaign.
“I've got to be honest, we have an extremely resilient and focused group of people who are driven by data and performance,” Russell said in an exclusive interview. “They are quite level-headed during the roller coaster of an F1 season. What I mean by this is, through the lows, the team did not feel so low—they were just focused on the process of performance and improving. Now through the highs, they're still so focused on the performance and improving. So the mentality and the mindset has actually been similar through the losses and through the success.”

This season, Russell has trailed his team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who has taken six victories compared to Russell's two. Despite the deficit, Russell remains a key asset for Mercedes, but he knows their status as the benchmark is fragile as rivals continue to develop.
“Right now we cannot be complacent,” he asserted. “Today we're winning. You would be confident that this will continue for a number of races. But if you get the next upgrade wrong, or Ferrari brings a big upgrade, or one kink in the chain stops working, this success can be in the past and can be history. You can't be too complacent in the good times. You can't be too low and negative in the bad times.”
Mercedes faces the challenge of maintaining consistency, especially after reliability issues cost them valuable points earlier. However, Russell is confident the team has a solid foundation to keep fighting at the front. With a long season still ahead, the pressure is on Mercedes to prove they deserve to be champions.
