George Russell and Carlos Sainz completed the opening day of Pirelli’s Silverstone tyre test, with Mercedes and Williams running an important programme for Formula 1’s 2027 dry-weather tyre specification.
The test forms part of Pirelli’s work to finalise the construction of its dry tyres ahead of the 2027 season. That decision must be made soon because of tyre production timelines, while the regulations also include a specification freeze on September 1.
The first day began with screening runs in the morning before the afternoon programme shifted towards more promising solutions for long runs. Track conditions were hot, with surface temperatures reaching 46 degrees Celsius.

Russell completed the largest mileage on the opening day. He logged 113 laps, equivalent to 665 kilometres, in the Mercedes and set a best time of 1:30.695, faster than Sunday’s race fastest lap of 1:31.777.
Sainz had a more restricted day with Williams. The Spaniard completed 61 laps with a best time of 1:33.567 after a technical problem limited his running.
On Wednesday, Kimi Antonelli and Alex Albon will take over driving duties. The change of line-up gives Pirelli further reference points from two different cars, although the key technical parameters remain controlled by the tyre supplier.
During this type of test, drivers and teams are blind to the exact specifications being evaluated. Pirelli dictates the run plans and fuel loads, while teams are not permitted to test upgrades on their cars.
That format keeps the focus on tyre structure validation rather than team performance development. For Formula 1, the Silverstone data represents an important step before the 2027 tyre configuration is locked for the next production and homologation phase.
