The Formula 1 race weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez left a lingering storyline for George Russell, who opted to abruptly skip all media obligations following the grand prix. This hasty exit cost his Mercedes squad a financial penalty after the FIA slapped the team with a 5,000 euro fine for the driver's absence from official media duties.
The British driver crossed the finish line in sixth place, while his teammate Kimi Antonelli delivered a stellar drive to secure third and clinch the World Championship crown. Given his vast experience and the undeniable pace of the Mercedes W17 package, many pundits initially tipped the senior driver as the title favourite, but a series of misfortunes and fluctuating performances ultimately derailed his championship ambitions.
This difficult turn of events leaves an intense battle for second place in the Drivers' standings as the season nears its conclusion. The struggling Brit now faces fierce pressure from rival contenders, including Max Verstappen, as the fight for the runner-up spot reaches a critical phase. After offering initial congratulations to his garage neighbor, the disgruntled driver chose an immediate departure from the venue.

Speaking ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend at Interlagos, the Mercedes racer opened up about the tipping point that led to his sudden exit. Frustration had boiled over following a tough race which included a costly 10-second time penalty for an opening-lap clash with Isack Hadjar.
"I was extremely disappointed Sunday night," said George Russell. "More from the fact of missing out on a great result from something again outside of my control, and that was just a really tough pill to swallow."
"This season it has been tough moment, pick yourself back up, tough moment, pick yourself back up, and I think, as an individual, I have continued to have that resilience of being able to always pick myself back up. It kind of just got to the point in Mexico where I was like, I need to just get out of here because it has just been relentless, what has happened this year."
Despite admitting the mental toll of a relentless calendar, the Silver Arrows charger has returned fully focused and ready to fight back on track in the remaining rounds.
