Francesco Bagnaia faces a race against time to recover after sustaining two fractures in his right foot following a violent accident during the sprint race at the Losail International Circuit. The factory Ducati rider was caught in a frightening collision early in the session.
The incident was triggered when Fermin Aldeguer lost control of his Gresini machine under braking, slamming into the reigning world champion and launching him high into the air. The resulting red flag forced a complete restart of the race, from which Bagnaia was sidelined, effectively ending his most promising weekend in recent memory.
Following an assessment by MotoGP medical director Dr. Angel Charte, the Ducati team confirmed the severity of the injury. "Initial medical examinations performed on Pecco Bagnaia at the medical center at the Losail International Circuit have revealed two fractures in his right foot, affecting the fourth and fifth metatarsals," the team stated. Bagnaia has been transferred to a Doha hospital for further evaluation to determine if surgery is required.
The timing of the injury is particularly cruel, with only two race weekends remaining on the 2026 calendar. While the two-week break before the final double-header in Portugal and Valencia might offer a slim window for recovery, his participation in the remaining rounds remains highly doubtful.
For the Borgo Panigale factory, this is a significant blow as they navigate the final stages of the championship. Bagnaia, a two-time world champion, is currently approaching the end of his tenure with the team. As the medical team assesses the recovery timeline, the paddock awaits further news on whether his racing season has come to an premature end.
