MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Francesco Bagnaia has outlined the key factors behind his second-place finish in the 2026 Jerez MotoGP Sprint, highlighting the impact of changing weather conditions and technical limitations on his Ducati Lenovo Team machine.

The Italian rider was running as low as 16th in the early stages of the race before rain began to fall mid-distance. Bagnaia reacted by pitting early to switch to a wet bike, becoming one of the first riders to do so after Brad Binder.

The decision proved decisive, as Bagnaia surged through the field and briefly took the lead with three laps remaining. However, he was later overtaken by team-mate Marc Marquez, who showed superior pace in wet conditions.

Despite securing a strong result, Bagnaia admitted that his overall performance was not at the level he expected, particularly due to a lack of rear grip in both dry and wet phases of the race.

“I’m happy about the result, but not happy about the performance. During the race I understood something that can help,” Bagnaia said.

He also pointed to a crash during Friday practice, which prevented him from properly evaluating a new Ducati modification that could have improved his competitiveness.

“The modification we used yesterday, when I crashed, could help. But it’s a shame we didn’t complete any laps because I could have been more prepared today. The bike has changed quite a bit, so we need to take big steps in terms of setup,” he explained.

Bagnaia identified rear grip as the primary issue limiting his pace, especially in the opening laps when he was unable to make progress through the field.

“The big problem is the amount of rear grip. I’m losing a lot of rear grip, even in the dry. In the first part of the race I was struggling a lot. I was stuck behind other riders and didn’t have the pace to overtake,” he said.

As rain intensified, Bagnaia recognised the need to switch bikes, although he admitted that the timing of his decision may not have been optimal.

“As soon as I saw the rain, I started to think about changing the bike. Maybe I did it one lap too late, but that’s how it went,” he added.

In the closing stages, Bagnaia attempted to follow Marquez’s pace but ultimately chose to manage the risk after nearly suffering a highside.

“I tried to follow Marc, who had great potential in the wet. I kept his pace for about one and a half laps, then I almost had a big highside, so I decided to stop pushing,” he said.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s grand prix, Bagnaia stressed the importance of the warm-up session, particularly with dry conditions expected.

“If we do the correct things with the bike, I think we will be fast,” he concluded, while declining to reveal details of the modification introduced on his Ducati.
