Human rights organisation Amnesty International has strongly criticized Formula 1 following the announcement of a landmark 10-year deal to host the African Grand Prix in Rwanda. Revealed on Tuesday, the agreement marks a historic return for the premier motorsport championship to the African continent for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix.

The upcoming races are scheduled to take place on a newly constructed, purpose-built circuit located in Bugesera, approximately 40 kilometers south of the capital city of Kigali. While motorsport enthusiasts celebrated the long-awaited expansion back to Africa, the lucrative partnership immediately ignited intense political debate and severe backlash from civil rights watchdogs.

Critics have accused the Rwandan authorities of leveraging the global motorsport platform to deflect attention away from serious domestic controversies. A representative for Amnesty International UK, Felix James, explicitly condemned the arrangement as a calculated move by the local government to polish its international reputation through high-profile sports investments.

Defending the controversial multi-year calendar addition, a spokesperson for Formula 1 stated in a BBC report that the championship possesses a unique opportunity to inspire millions of fans across the continent. The management emphasized their firm belief that global sport can serve as an active and positive force for good.

Despite these official assurances, human rights advocates maintain that partnering with Rwanda undermines those ethical principles. Reports from international monitors and the United Nations have previously raised profound concerns regarding regional stability, governance issues, and civil liberties within the host nation.
