Former Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has finally opened up regarding the real reasons behind his departure from the Milton Keynes squad last year. In an exclusive interview, he hinted that his exit was triggered by the perception that he held far too much influence over the team's operations.
During his tenure, he successfully guided the energy drinks-branded outfit through two distinct eras of Formula 1 dominance. The first era was built alongside Sebastian Vettel, securing four consecutive drivers' and constructors' world titles from 2010 to 2013, followed by another dominant era with Max Verstappen.
However, turbulent internal issues arose following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior, which ultimately cleared his name. The situation sparked a fractious power struggle within the organization throughout 2024. Combined with high-profile departures like Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley, alongside a decline in results heading into 2025, Horner was ultimately sacked as team principal in July 2025.

"I think the company just wanted to go in a different direction, or perhaps it was perceived I had too much influence over the team," Horner explained. He also noted that the corporate dynamic shifted drastically following the passing of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who had been his closest ally since the takeover of the Jaguar outfit.
Mateschitz passed away in October 2022, an event widely regarded as the catalyst for the internal power struggle as CEO Oliver Mintzlaff and the board sought tighter control over F1 operations. Losing such a foundational figure left a massive void in the management structure, drastically altering Horner's remit within the empire.
