Ex-US Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson Buys Stake in Aston Martin F1

Robert Wood Johnson, former United States Ambassador to the UK, has officially acquired a minority stake in the Aston Martin F1 team. This move adds another influential investor to the paddock while strengthening the team's ties with the American market.

Johnson, who also owns the NFL's New York Jets, is no stranger to the world of sports. He is an heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical empire and holds a 43% stake in Crystal Palace football club. During his ambassadorship from 2017 to 2021, he said he developed a deep appreciation for Aston Martin's rich history.

Despite the purchase, the stake is purely commercial. Aston Martin has confirmed that Johnson will not undertake any day-to-day management duties. Lawrence Stroll remains in full control as executive chairman, with his Yew Tree Consortium holding the majority stake in AMR GP.

"During my time as US ambassador to the United Kingdom, I have developed a deep appreciation for Aston Martin's rich history, as well as Lawrence Stroll's strategic vision and entrepreneurial spirit," Johnson said in an official statement. "I am excited to partner with him and contribute to the continued development of the team, with the ambition of building an organisation capable of competing at the very highest level of the sport."

Johnson also highlighted the potential for F1's growth in the US. "We also share a commitment to growing the fanbase in the United States and introducing even more fans to the excitement of Formula 1," he added.

Stroll welcomed the investment. "His experience, passion and investment further strengthen our position as we enter the next phase of our competitive journey," he said. "His deep appreciation for our brand, combined with his commitment to innovation and commercial opportunity, makes him an ideal partner as we look to the future."

With Johnson on board, the shareholder structure of AMR GP is becoming more diverse. Arctos Partners and Adrian Newey already hold minority stakes. This move also signals the team's growing ties with global investors, aligning with Aston Martin's ambition to become a top-tier force in F1.
