Former Formula 1 CEO Chase Carey has revealed that New York was considered alongside Miami and Las Vegas for a grand prix race following Liberty Media's takeover of the championship.
Carey, who ran F1 as CEO from 2017 until Stefano Domenicali took over in 2021, joined an impressive line-up of panellists at the Autosport Business Exchange in New York City to discuss the growth and global influence of motorsport in the United States.
During an on-stage conversation with Fox Business anchor Liz Claman at the Manhattan Motorcars showroom, Carey stated that growing the championship footprint in the U.S. was a priority from day one due to its immense influence on global media and entertainment brands.

Outlining the criteria for new venues, Carey explained that locations needed to be iconic places that could genuinely wow people. While praising the fabulous race in Austin, management identified only three locations that made sense for expansion at that time: New York, Miami, and Las Vegas.
Ultimately, the management realistically recognized that bringing F1 to New York was not going to happen due to logistical hurdles. Consequently, Miami and Las Vegas became the primary targets, successfully joining the calendar in 2022 and 2023 respectively with long-term extensions locked in.
