Pastor Maldonado produced one of the most unexpected victories in modern Formula 1 history by winning the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix. However, the historic moment for Williams turned dramatic only hours later when a major fire broke out inside the team’s garage at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Maldonado originally inherited pole position after Lewis Hamilton was excluded from qualifying results for failing to return to the pits under the car’s own power to provide a fuel sample to the FIA. Hamilton had initially set the fastest lap, but the technical infringement created a huge opportunity for Maldonado.
The Venezuelan driver fully capitalised on the situation. After 66 intense laps, Maldonado successfully resisted pressure from Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso to secure his maiden Formula 1 victory by 3.195 seconds, becoming the first Venezuelan driver ever to win a Formula 1 grand prix.
Kimi Raikkonen completed the podium for Lotus in third place. For Williams, the victory ended a 12-year winless streak stretching back to the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix.
The result was widely viewed as a major redemption moment for Williams after the team’s dominant era during the 1990s had gradually faded throughout the following decade.
However, celebrations changed completely approximately 90 minutes after the chequered flag when a major fire suddenly erupted inside the Williams garage. Official investigations later confirmed the blaze was triggered by a failure in the fuel rig system, causing flames to rapidly spread across the team’s equipment and workspace.
Thick black smoke quickly covered the Barcelona paddock while emergency crews rushed to contain the fire. A total of 31 people were reported injured in the incident, including seven individuals who required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation and minor burns.
The fire destroyed valuable Williams equipment including computers containing car setup data and spare parts worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. Several mechanics also suffered minor injuries while attempting to rescue equipment from the burning garage.
The incident later fuelled multiple conspiracy theories across social media, ranging from claims about hidden technical infringements to allegations of race manipulation. However, none of those theories were ever substantiated after official investigations confirmed the fire was solely caused by the fuel rig malfunction.
To this day, Maldonado’s victory at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix remains one of the most surprising results in modern Formula 1 history, while also standing as one of the most dramatic days Williams has ever experienced during the grand prix era.
