Max Verstappen sparked laughter in the paddock ahead of the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid with a light-hearted joke about his Red Bull seat. The four-time Formula 1 champion hinted he might eventually step aside for Robin Raikkonen, the 11-year-old son of 2007 F1 champion Kimi Raikkonen, who recently joined the Red Bull Junior Team.
Robin, currently making his mark in European karting, caught attention with his move to Red Bull's junior programme. Verstappen revealed he had already spoken with the Raikkonen family to congratulate them on the deal, having been privately aware of the agreement before it was made public.
"Yeah, I met them before the race on Sunday. They were sitting upstairs, so I had a quick chat with Kimi and with Robin," Verstappen told Motorsport.com and other media. "It was good. When they were around I had a little chat and I knew that he was signed already. It's good to see."
When it was pointed out to him that he would likely not be racing in F1 by the time Robin is ready to compete for a seat, the Dutchman joked: "Yeah, who knows. Maybe, maybe not. I guess eventually they also need a seat for him in the team. So then, yeah, maybe I'll move aside."
The joke comes amid Verstappen's long-term commitment to Red Bull. In late August, he signed a contract extension keeping him at Milton Keynes until the end of 2030, putting to bed rumours of a potential retirement or a move to Mercedes or McLaren. With such a lengthy deal, Verstappen's 'move aside' comment is clearly a quip, not a sign of imminent plans.
However, behind the humour lies the reality of regeneration within the Red Bull Junior Team. The programme has a rich history of producing successful F1 drivers, including Verstappen himself, Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz, Daniel Ricciardo, Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, and Liam Lawson. Robin's arrival adds a new layer to that tradition, though his journey to F1 is still a long way off.
Red Bull is known for its aggressive management of young talent, often giving junior drivers opportunities if their on-track performance meets expectations. Yet with Verstappen tied down until 2030, the team's lead seat is secure for now. Robin, focused on honing his skills in karting, has years ahead before he is truly considered for an F1 seat. By the time he is ready, the F1 landscape may have shifted, including the driver lineup at top teams.
This story also carries an emotional dimension for F1 fans. Kimi Raikkonen was one of the most iconic drivers with his unique personality. Seeing his son follow in his footsteps under the Red Bull banner, a team that was once Kimi's rival at Ferrari, adds a compelling narrative. Verstappen, who grew up as a big fan of Kimi, seems to enjoy the moment and playfully opens the door to an unexpected scenario in the future.
