Ahead of this weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix, the Formula 1 grid is bracing for a potential historic coronation as Kimi Antonelli sits just a ninth-place finish away from clinching his maiden drivers' championship. The 20-year-old's meteoric rise to the pinnacle of motorsport success has unfolded in remarkably quick fashion, arriving in just his second season following a substantial developmental leap from his challenging rookie campaign.

Boasting a stellar tally of nine Grand Prix victories so far this year, the young charger has consistently demonstrated a championship-winning temperament. Offering his perspective on the title contender's trajectory, reigning world champion Max Verstappen predicted that securing his first world title will only mold the young Italian into an even sharper and more complete racing driver.

"He hasn't yet tapped into 100 per cent of his potential, and winning the world title will make him even better," Verstappen told Bild. Highlighting the psychological shift that comes with achieving motorsport's ultimate prize, the Red Bull star noted how the pressure tends to dissipate once the primary career milestone is unlocked. "You've achieved your life's goal and start approaching race weekends with a more relaxed attitude," he explained.

During the same media interaction, the Dutch ace also weighed in on the contrasting career phase of one of the grid's most seasoned veterans, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen emphasized that a defining difference between the British icon and the rising Mercedes star lies in the sheer margin of developmental headroom remaining for the younger competitor.

Elaborating on his assessment of the seasoned champion versus the rising generation, Verstappen clarified his remarks regarding raw pace development. "He probably won't get any faster. Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying Lewis is getting slower, just that he won't get any faster. It's different with Kimi. There's still a lot more left in him," Verstappen concluded.
