Max Verstappen proved his class once again with a second-place finish at the Spanish Grand Prix, despite intense pressure from Lando Norris in the closing laps. The Red Bull driver started from third and immediately made an impression with a bold move at the first corner.
The race was dramatic from the start. Verstappen cut the opening corner and passed Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli. However, Red Bull instructed Verstappen to return both positions, which initially drew his complaints. After Hamilton retired, Verstappen moved up to third, then to second after Norris was unable to pit during a virtual safety car (VSC) period while leading. Verstappen did pit.
With fresher tyres, Norris was able to catch Verstappen in the closing laps. Yet the reigning world champion could not find a way past. "Looking at the race pace, for us, a great result," said Verstappen. "Lando got unlucky with the VSC, so for us P2 is an incredible result because you could see how much he was catching me but around here you can't pass, so I could keep him behind."
Verstappen has been critical of the Madring's layout throughout the weekend, mostly because it does not feature an overtaking opportunity. That, in itself, made defending simple for Red Bull's star driver. Asked how he kept Norris behind, Verstappen explained with a comical response: "Just keep the car in the middle. That works quite well around here and just trying to keep the grip in the tyres, which was the hardest part of that stint."
This result was a surprise podium for Red Bull, who were not expected to challenge at the front. Verstappen maximized every opportunity, including taking advantage of the VSC. Meanwhile, Norris had to settle for second after losing out due to an unlucky strategy.
With these points, Verstappen strengthens his position in the drivers' championship. Red Bull also showed they can still be competitive even when not the favorites. The next race will be another test for Verstappen and his team to maintain consistency at the front.
Verstappen's criticism of the Madring may continue to echo, but at least in Spain, he turned complaints into a tangible result. A reminder that in racing, sometimes keeping the car in the middle is the most effective strategy.
