US Grand Prix 2026: Lando Norris Rueing Safety Car Timing After McLaren One-Stop Gamble
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Norris ended up as a surprise podium contender on Sunday

British driver Lando Norris confessed he was praying for a Safety Car intervention to rescue McLaren's aggressive one-stop strategy gamble at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, which ultimately saw him slip from second to fifth in the closing stages. Starting from eighth on the grid, the reigning champion was placed on a single-stop plan while the majority of his competitors opted for a two-stop strategy.

The bold tactical move temporarily elevated him to second place during the latter phase of the race. However, running on heavily worn hard tyres, he was rapidly hunted down by Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. Both drivers managed to overtake him simultaneously at Turn 1, knocking him off the podium positions in a dramatic sequence of events.

Shortly after, Lewis Hamilton also capitalized on fresh rubber to push Norris down to fifth place. A Virtual Safety Car that could have offered Norris a cheaper pit stop for fresh tyres only materialized when Valtteri Bottas suffered a mechanical failure with five laps remaining, proving far too late to salvage his race strategy.

“We tried, and we were not there on pace or anything, so we had to give it a shot,” Norris told media members in the paddock. “If there was any VSC or a Safety Car, we were right in contention for a good podium, even P2 for a lot of it, so we were hoping, I was praying, but it never came.”

Reflecting on the tyre degradation issues, Norris revealed that the pit wall heavily debated calling him in for a fresh set of tyres as his pace dropped, but ultimately chose to commit to the existing track position.

“The team was debating whether to box onto different tyres or not, and I was hoping to have a better chance with the hard tyre, but it just degraded. We chose to stay out; there was no disagreement, and the team did a very good job on the strategy,” Norris concluded.
