Ugo Ugochukwu clinched the 2026 Formula 3 championship on Sunday at Madring, despite entering the final round as a dark horse. The Campos Racing driver defeated his main rival, Freddie Slater, in a tense battle that went down to the final race.
A Season-Long Duel
Ugochukwu and Slater showed remarkable consistency in feature races from the start. Until the summer break, Slater had six podium finishes, while Ugochukwu had five. No other driver managed more than two top-three finishes on Sundays, making the title fight a private affair between the two.
Slater's Monza Setback
Spearheading Audi's Driver Development Programme, Slater had a golden chance to pull away at Monza. However, after finishing second in the sprint, he lost positions from pole in the feature race and retired with a technical issue. As a result, he headed to the finale with only a 15-point advantage over Ugochukwu.
Qualifying Woes at Madring
The Madring round featured three races to compensate for the cancelled Bahrain event due to the Iran war. Slater qualified poorly in 17th and eighth, while Ugochukwu lined up fourth and second. Those qualifying positions proved to be Slater's undoing.
The Decisive Races
In the sprint, Ugochukwu finished eighth while Slater failed to score. In the first feature race, Ugochukwu came home fourth, with Slater again pointless. That meant whoever scored the most points on Sunday would be champion. Ugochukwu drove a solid race, holding second without pressure, while Slater could only manage eighth after losing a place to Yevan David early on.
Champion's Reaction
"It felt like a much longer race than usual," Ugochukwu said. "It was difficult with the dirty air to overtake Tuukka. I tried my best for a few laps, but I saw I couldn't get close enough. We knew P2 would clinch the title, so we just had to bring it home. Every kerb felt louder than usual, I started hearing weird sounds, but I had to keep it clean until the end. Once I crossed the finish line, I could relax. Just really relieved."
Redemption and Future
This success tastes like redemption for Ugochukwu, who left the McLaren junior programme at the end of last year after finishing his maiden F3 season in 16th. He had also previously beaten Slater to the Formula Regional European title over the winter. Now, Ugochukwu's name shines even brighter as one of the most promising young talents.
