Toto Wolff Admits Hurdles Over Latest Mercedes W17 Upgrade in 2026
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
The upgrades fitted to the W17 in Sepang have not produced the expected results

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has candidly admitted that the Brackley-based squad is having to re-evaluate parts of its latest development package fitted to the W17 charger during the 2026 Formula 1 season. Despite introducing major aerodynamic revisions earlier in the year, on-track data has revealed that the anticipated performance gains have not fully materialized as initially hoped.

The development trajectory for the W17 this season has seen the Silver Arrows experiment with split technical strategies across their garage. During the race weekend at Sepang, the team ran a split setup where Kimi Antonelli tested the new upgrade package while George Russell stuck with the previous specification to gather comparative telemetry data.

While Antonelli secured a strong second-place finish behind reigning world champion Max Verstappen while Russell suffered a retirement, the unique layout of the venue meant engineers could not immediately draw sweeping conclusions. A definitive assessment was deferred until both drivers could concurrently run the updated aerodynamic package at the subsequent round in the Americas.

Addressing the media in the paddock leading up to the race weekend, Wolff elaborated on the complex setup requirements demanded by the current ground-effect regulations. "I think that this new car needs a very different setup philosophy than the previous car, and this is what we’re learning at the moment," Wolff stated to reporters.

The Mercedes chief maintained a pragmatic outlook regarding the development curve, acknowledging that significant work remains ahead. "Does it have the performance that we were hoping the upgrade would bring? I don’t think so yet, but it was a step in the right direction, and we shall see whether we can continue to consolidate that, and whether, in effect, it has more performance because it’s crucial for the development direction for next year," he added.

Meanwhile, those technical hurdles were echoed by George Russell, who struggled to unlock consistent pace due to a remarkably narrow operating window. The British driver contrasted the current struggles with the seamless introduction of previous updates in Montreal, emphasizing that a truly successful package should provide immediate driver confidence upon leaving the pit lane.
