Trackhouse Aprilia rider Ai Ogura had to swallow a bitter pill after leading most of the MotoGP sprint race at the Sepang International Circuit. Having controlled the race brilliantly in damp conditions, the Japanese rider ultimately crossed the finish line in fourth place after being overtaken by his pursuers in the closing laps. Despite showing impressive speed throughout the session, clear disappointment remained visible from the young rider.
As reported by Speedweek, Ai Ogura recounted the challenging race dynamics as rain began to fall on the circuit. He inherited the lead following a crash involving Alex Marquez on lap three, leaving him to race entirely alone at the front of the field without any rider ahead to use as a benchmark.
"After it started raining, I was leading for a few laps. But my pace stagnated. I had no one in front of me to use as a reference; I was riding completely alone," Ai Ogura explained regarding the tense situation on the slippery track.

The situation grew increasingly difficult as the riders behind him found their rhythm and gradually closed the gap before overtaking him. Ai Ogura admitted that his pace remained flat while his rivals were simply faster during the second half of the race, dropping him out of podium contention.
"My pace stayed the same later on, while the three riders behind me were simply faster and slowly overtook me. It is difficult to deal with such a situation," he added, expressing frustration at missing out on a potential podium finish.
Prior to the late race drama, Ai Ogura engaged in a fierce battle against championship leader Marc Marquez. The intense duel occurred during the opening stages and repeated itself towards the finish line, with both riders running side-by-side into identical corners.
"After making up a few places right after the start, there was a small duel with Marc. We came side-by-side into the same section several times ā things got pretty heated. I had to defend my position, but I knew he had a better pace than me and wanted to overtake," Ai Ogura recalled about the close-quarters racing.
Despite failing to secure a podium finish, the significant step forward in performance compared to Friday's practice sessions brought some satisfaction. Overnight adjustments by the team successfully unlocked better speed and consistency, even though the final race result wasn't fully optimized.
"For us, this came as a surprise. Overnight, my team did an outstanding job and gave me more speed and consistency. Our performance was much better than yesterday," he concluded regarding the weekend's progress.
