Speculation surrounding Liam Lawson’s future at Racing Bulls for the 2027 season has ignited a fierce debate across the Formula 1 paddock. Despite his standout performances placing him ninth in the drivers' standings, rumors persist that the team is considering replacing the New Zealander with rookie Nikola Tsolov.
A sharp analysis comes from Sky Sports F1 pundit Karun Chandhok, who has publicly criticized the potential move. He insists there is no statistical or performance-based justification for such a switch. Lawson has established himself as the driving force behind the team, currently on the verge of securing fifth in the constructors' championship—a vital achievement for the team's ongoing development.
"I don't see how there's any data or information inside, outside, upside down, in between that suggests that Nikola Tsolov is faster, or a better option, than Liam Lawson today, objectively, I just don't understand that," Chandhok stated on the Sky Sports F1 podcast.

Chandhok further warned that axing Lawson would be one of the most unjust sackings in recent F1 history. He emphasized that the Red Bull junior team philosophy has shifted significantly; they are no longer just an incubator for young drivers in the vein of the Sebastian Vettel or Max Verstappen eras, but a mid-field contender with significant commercial and prize money stakes.
Furthermore, Chandhok argued that dropping Lawson would leave the team without a clear performance benchmark for incoming juniors. Without an experienced reference point, evaluating the progress of talents like Arvid Lindblad becomes a guessing game. For Chandhok, keeping the current lineup is the only logical path to maintain the competitive momentum of a team that has clearly outgrown its back-of-the-grid origins.
