The Formula 1 paddock was left stunned as Haas made the sudden decision to bench Esteban Ocon just ahead of the final practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The abrupt driver change sent shockwaves through the pit lane, with the team confirming that the unexpected absence was not related to any illness or medical concerns.
Speculation immediately turned toward potential internal friction following a tense radio exchange on Friday. During practice, Esteban Ocon openly expressed frustration over team radio when race engineer Laura Mueller instructed him to run medium compound tyres instead of the soft set he had requested for his performance simulation runs.
Team principal Ayao Komatsu remained tight-lipped when pressed for details by broadcasters during FP3, refusing to elaborate on whether the heated radio disagreement contributed to the sudden roster shake-up. Komatsu insisted that the team's primary focus remained firmly on the on-track sessions rather than addressing the swirling paddock rumors.
The unexpected move handed a historic Formula 1 race debut to the veteran endurance racer at 32 years of age, forcing Oliver Bearman to shoulder additional garage leadership as the team scrambled to adapt its engineering program for the remainder of the Mexican weekend.
Uncertainty now surrounds the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix regarding who will pilot the machine if the sudden benching extends further. Potential options include reserve driver Jack Doohan or Ferrari junior Rafael Camara, leaving the future of Esteban Ocon shrouded in heavy doubt.
