Pierre Gasly silenced the Monza paddock. The BWT Alpine F1 Team driver snatched his first Formula 1 pole position with a dramatic last-gasp effort in qualifying for the 2026 Italian Grand Prix. The historic circuit witnessed a massive upset that instantly reshaped the competitive order.

Fierce Duel and Engine Penalties

Gasly managed to displace George Russell, who had looked comfortable at the top. The Mercedes driver arrived with the mission of closing the points gap to his team-mate, Kimi Antonelli. But at Monza's high-speed corners, everything can change in an instant.

Oscar Piastri put his McLaren third, ahead of the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen had to settle for just behind them. The pressure at the front felt intense.

Antonelli actually set the seventh-fastest time, but he will start from the very back of the grid due to an engine penalty. Liam Lawson and Alex Albon suffered the same fate. This situation automatically promoted Franco Colapinto to seventh on the grid.

Opportunity Amid Penalties

The penalties for Antonelli, Lawson, and Albon turned into a blessing for other drivers. Lando Norris, Arvid Lindblad, and Gabriel Bortoleto completed the top ten. Sunday's race is set to be a proving ground for those who escaped the penalty trap.

With his first pole, Gasly has a golden opportunity to make history. However, Monza is famous for slipstreams and last-lap drama. Can he hold off the chasing pack? All eyes will be on the start.
